My Border Collies: Trick Dog, Therapy Dog and Ongoing Training in Dog Socialization

Yukon is a yound Red Merle Border Collie adolescent. He came to us from Oklahoma. Yukon is a very independent and high drive Border Collie ready to work 24/7. He LOVES his disc and forgets everything around him when I pull it out. He also enjoys the water and thinks that a rain storm is a gigantic shower that was turned on specifically for him. He already made lots of doggy friends, no matter what size or breed. Yukon passed his AKC S.T.A.R. puppy test with 14 weeks and we are working on the Canine Good Citizen test. Yukon knows a few tricks and earned his Novice, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert Trick Dog Titles by 11 months young! Check his training progress here

Cyder is a 8 year young Red and White Border Collie. Cyder came to us from the Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue when she was 4 years old. In her short life before she came to us she had already lived in four different homes. The reasons are unknown except the last family who put her on Craigs List with the excuse that she is not able to feed her. That did not look this way since Cyder was about 7 lbs overweight, which is tremendous overweight on a Border Collie (or any other dog for that matter).
Like a lot of rescue dogs Cyder came with some behavior issues. She was extremely tense and nervous when we brought her home. Her normally so smart border collie brain has not been put to use and she was fairly slow in learning at first but once she knew her first trick she became smarter and smarter. Unfortunately her extreme tenseness will never disappear all together. She will be a dog that has to have a set routine and security in her life. We tried Agility together, but she did not enjoy it. Yes, even though she is a Border Collie! However, her quiet and gentle demeanor and love for people is perfectly suited to visit Alzheimer facilities as a therapy dog, so she became a certified therapy dog in March 2010 and has been enjoying her work ever since.

Zena is a 2 year young Mixed Breed and, what we call a 'Foster-Failure'. I brought her home from the shelter for a 2-week fostering period to socialize her. She was seized with 8 other puppies and 3 adult dogs of a property. Except her, all adult dogs and puppies were euthanized due to extreme poor health conditions or aggression. Zena was emaciated, had flea bitten sores, hook worms, tapeworms and ticks. After one week of fostering it was clear that she had other health issues as well and after a few months long battle of different antibiotics to fight a urinary tract infection that did not work, an x-ray revealed a marble sized bladder stone that had developed due to the poor nutrition early in her life, which consisted of rodents, worms, squirrels, etc. At that point she was only 7 month old and now had to undergo her second surgery (the first one was the spay-surgery). After the removal of the bladder stone she was cured health-wise, but not emotionally. Her lack of socialization with people in her most important time took a toll on her, so my rehabilitation process began. For over one year I have been working on behavior modification and she can now take a walk in the neighborhood without lunging and growling at everyone or everything that we may pass. However, she will never be a dog that can be approached by strangers. Though her ability to communicate with other dogs is great. She is very smart and knows a lot of tricks. Zena stole my heart the moment I pulled her out of the holding ward at the shelter!
